DHEA, often considered an anti-aging hormone, is a precursor to our steroid hormones (including testosterone and estrogen), which decline with age.
Supplements That Might Help You to Reduce Stress
In addition to a diet of high-quality protein and high-fiber vegetables, consider trying these supplements.
• B-complex vitamins, high-potency formula (with dosages comparable to those described in chapter 10). Many of the B vitamins are necessary to make calming neurotransmitters—hence, their reputation as antistress nutrients.
• Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), 100 to 200 mg daily. |

Uzzi Reiss, founder of the Beverly Hills anti-aging Center and coauthor of Natural Hormone Balance for Women, explains as follows:
Progesterone is the most protective breast hormone. At an infertility clinic at Johns Hopkins, Linda Cowan published a study in the early 1980s. She followed two groups of women for more than 20 years. There aren't many studies like this. What's unique about these women is that one group had blocked fallopian tubes, and the other group had progesterone deficiency. The only long-term health effect the women with blocked tubes had was the inability to get pregnant. |

After ginseng, gotu kola—also called fo ti tieng—is one of the most widely touted anti-aging herbs. Its reputation appears to have mythological roots. According to an old Chinese legend, an elderly man, Li Ching Yun, had many wives whom he satisfied with no problem. He drank a great deal of fo ti tieng tea, to which he credited his longevity and virility.
I like this story, regardless of whether it's true. It inspires me to eat a few gotu kola leaves whenever I wander past the plant, which grows best among the rocks lining the pond near my Garden of Youth. |

In 1997, the foundation announced that SAMe "promises to be the most potent, multipurpose, anti-aging, anti-disease therapy we have ever introduced." Powerful words.
Has the prediction held up?
In a word, yes. The Life Extension Foundation was on the money with this one. While I'm not a fan of hyperbole that sounds levels higher than the recommended daily allowance is critical for preserving and slowing bone loss. And if you needed any further proof, the Framingham Heart Study found that men and women with the highest intakes of potassium and magnesium had the strongest bone density. |

The Eight anti-aging Elixirs
The herbs that I describe above can keep you healthy and prevent dozens of illnesses. But they're not the whole story. I also favor the fountain-of-youth herbs, my name for what Asians call tonics and a growing number of Western scientists call adaptogens. No matter how you refer to them, these herbs act slowly to enhance overall health and well-being as well as to promote youthfulness and longevity.
Adaptogen/tonic/fountain-of-youth herbs are controversial in the West for several reasons. |

The company claims that" Thermus thermophilus ferment" is the anti-aging miracle worker in this product. (But if it's such a miracle why isn't it included in other Babor products?) Supposedly, the ferment is harvested at 7,500 feet below sea level (because, of course, nothing that exciting for skin ever washes up on the shore), but Thermus thermophilus is merely a gram-negative strain of bacteria found both in shallow and deep water, and at varying temperatures. |
| This product does contain a tiny amount of mica, which adds a soft glow to skin.
© anti-aging Daily Cream SPF 15 ($19.99for 1.6ounces) brags about the antioxidants it contains, but although they're present the amounts are scant, and the jar packaging won't keep them stable once the product is opened. The only reason to consider this product is for its value as an in-part avobenzone sunscreen for normal to slightly dry skin. |
| Ignoring this fundamental principle and focusing instead on anti-aging claims (which, if they don't involve sunscreen, don't require proof of efficacy) is an open invitation for more wrinkles, skin discolorations, and, potentially, skin cancer. The basics to look for are a product rated SPF 15 or higher, and make sure it has one of the following ingredients listed as active to ensure adequate protection from UVA rays: avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789 or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Mexoryl SX (ecamsule), or Tinosorb. |
| Lastly, I don't know where Blisslabs got their ten most effective anti-aging ingredients because no research has established any such directive, but I can think of dozens and dozens they did not include.
© $$$ Thinny Thin Chin ($48 for 1.7 ounces) is sold as being the most exciting thing to happen to your neck since your first hickey (if you consider a bruised red spot on your neck exciting) because of its alleged effect on jowls and loose skin on the chest. |

Academy of anti-aging Research, guesses that as many as 90 percent of us are addicted. "Not to be hooked on sugar and refined carbohydrates is abnormal nowadays. You really have to try not to do it," says Dr. Lam.
Experts Troubled by Long-Term Ramifications of Sugar Addiction
More and more, medical experts are alarmed by our excessive consumption of sweets and refined carbs, a habit that, they believe, could send many to an early death. |
| Lam, medical education director at the Pasadena, California-based Academy of anti-aging Research, a worldwide society of health professionals dedicated to advancing antiaging medicine.
"Of course, the more damage you have to your skin, the harder it is to repair. But as long as you stop feeding it sugar, the free radicals will reduce, and the damage to collagen will reduce. The best way to build collagen is from the inside."
Sweets and much-like-sugar carbs damage skin in another way, too. |

Tips on Using Acai
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• Acai comes in juice, frozen pulp, bottled smoothies, and powder forms that are all readily available at most health food stores and grocery markets. |

At the 2006 A4M (American Academy for anti-aging Medicine) in Las Vegas, I was amazed to learn from some physicians that my talk on the subject actually challenged them into thinking differently about heart disease, as well as many other diseases. Those physicians became as passionate as I am about the ATP link to the heart and disease. When you think "ATP," you must think ENERGY! ENERGY! ENERGY!
An easy metaphor can help you conceptualize the complex topic of energy metabolism in the heart: think of the heart as an energy battery. |

Caloric restriction does appear to turn on the expression of the anti-aging genes and turn off the expression of the aging genes, and most likely turns off the expression of diabetic genes. We have a full memory of all our gene expression in our chromosomes; all we have to do is push the right dietary button to get a healthy expression.
CULTURAL EVIDENCE SUPPORTING CALORIC RESTRICTION
Human cross-cultural studies reveal the same results. Dr. |
| Spindler found a fourfold increase in the expression of the anti-aging genes in short-term caloric restrictions, and a 2.5-fold increase in the expression of youthing genes in long-term caloric restriction. He was able to reproduce this with a 95 percent success rate.
Spindler noted that caloric restriction not only prevented deterioration or genetic change gradually over the life span of the animal, but actually reversed most of the aging changes in a short period of time. His research lasted only a month with the rats. |
| Stephen Spindler, it is our theory that calorie restriction turns on the anti-aging and theoretically the anti-diabetic genes. In our dietary approach, there is actually no restriction, but the participant is invited to enjoy a delicious, healthy cuisine. This is the powerful secret of the success of this program. In the second week, a four-day course shows people how to let go of their belief that diabetes is incurable. It also shows people how to let go of all the psychological programming and habits that create the diabetes lifestyle. |
| One of the phytonutrients, for example, called resveratrol, plays a very important role in activating the anti-aging genes. It is gaining growing recognition in fighting age-related diseases ranging from dementia to diabetes. On a live-food diet properly eaten, we actually eat 50 percent fewer calories as compared to a Standard American Diet (SAD), but maintain a very high level of nutrition. The reason for this is that we are consuming nutrient-dense foods, not just calorie-dense foods such as those offered in restaurants and fast-food dispensaries all over the Westernized world. |
| The Tree of Life World Cuisine naturally stimulates and reactivates the anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic genes, and turns off the diabetes-causing genes with the aid of the rainbow menu of phytonutrients. |
| Metformin has been claimed to be one of the best anti-aging drugs currently available. Goat's rue causes a long-lasting reduction of blood sugar in rats and an increase in carbohydrate tolerance. In one study, goat's rue extract lowered the blood sugar of diabetic rats by 32 percent.190 Goat's rue extracts have increased glycogen levels in the liver and myocardium of both healthy and diabetic rabbits. In addition, this potent herb lowers blood sugar in both normal and diabetic humans.191

Synthetic hormones do not provide the same anti-aging benefits as natural, bioidentical hormones.
My patients are familiar with the following question: "If it is found that you are low in a hormone, and you are given a choice of a natural, bioidentical hormone—one that closely mimics your own hormone chemically and structurally, versus a synthetic hormone—a man-made derivative of a hormone that has been structurally altered to become a patentable product, which one would you pick? |

All these properties of coenzyme Qiq enhance its anti-aging benefits.
Coenzyme Q10 in Cellular Energy Metabolism
Coenzyme Qio's role in cellular energy metabolism is probably its most important function. We have already learned that most of the body's energy metabolism occurs in the mitochondria through a process called oxidative phosphorylation. Electrons are transported through this pathway down the electron transport chain, where they give up their energy to generate ATP from ADP, fueling virtually every cellular function. |

Vitamin B-3 is a superior to aspirin as anti-aging agent. Aspirin used in low dose is widely touted as the one of the main answers to geriatric decline, but it has serious side-effects, such as excessive bleeding. It is estimated that 67 patients must take aspirin in order to protect one against a stroke or myocardial infarction, but from each 100, one will suffer serious bleeding. In comparison, niacin is safe. |

The paradox of free-radical chemistry has generated enormous interest among healthcare professionals, especially those interested in preventive and anti-aging medicine.
While free radicals may play a supportive role in certain physiological processes, an overabundance is highly damaging to the cell. Clearly, maintaining the health and normal function of cellular mitochondria is key to staying strong and vigorous. Mitochondria don't function properly when they become tired, vulnerable, or worn out. |

AMAZON FRUIT anti-aging MIRACLE
Acai is a fruit from the Amazon. It boosts energy, has disease-fighting and age-fighting properties, and is one of the most powerful antioxidants on the earth. Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Denise Richards sing its praises. It is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world, says a leading anti-aging doctor. This fruit can lower cholesterol and protects against heart disease and stroke. It is also loaded with calcium, which prevents osteoporosis, cancer, and makes you sleep incredibly well. It also repairs damaged tissue to the skin. |

The final phase comes from the forefront of anti-aging medicine. "Among pharmaceutical drugs used to help regenerate the brain cells is 1-deprenyl citrate. Deprenyl has been shown to increase longevity in animals and increase important biochemicals in the brain. In recent studies of patients with moderate Alzheimer's disease, Deprenyl improved attention, memory, verbal fluency and behavior. Side effects associated with Deprenyl may include anxiety and insomnia if the dosage is too high. |
| Dharma Singh Khalsa, founder of the American Academy of anti-aging Medicine, has written numerous articles and several books on brain longevity. "When we talk about the brain, there is almost a schism in the way it's looked at these days. Many people in the medical establishment still look at the brain like it's a computer with certain files. I consider that very 2 0th century. In the 21 st century, the brain is going to be considered more like a symphony, an orchestration that is constantly changing and vibrating and moving and having deep rich colors. |

Perhaps these characteristics are what gives niacin its anti-aging properties, recently confirmed by the Women's Health Study presented at the Ninth International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease.^ Beginning in 1991, nearly 40,000 women 66 years of age or older were enrolled in this study, which established that those in the highest HDL quin-tile had the least chance of developing cognitive impairment. Although there was no association shown with other lipids, a linearly decreasing risk was associated with increasing levels of HDL. |
